Things to Know Before Moving to Florida

Many people move to Florida simply because of the weather. It is called the sunshine state for a reason! Here’s some things to know before moving to Florida.

Warm weather in Florida

Summer in Florida is hot and humid while the short “winter” is more mild. Florida may not have the four traditional seasons but it does have seasons of its own. Wet and dry season. From late May to the end of October is Florida’s wet season. This season brings the majority of Florida’s yearly rainfall. Dry season is November through April where you will see less rainfall and a significant drop in humidity. Be prepared for lightweight clothing, air conditioning, sunscreen and lots of water!

North Florida vs South Florida

Northern Florida experiences different temperatures than South and Central Florida. During the summer South and Central Florida see highs of 80-90 while dropping to lows of 60-70 in the winter. Northern cities experience colder winters with lows in the 40s and highs in the 70s.

Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

The weather changes quickly in Florida. It is important to keep up on hurricanes and tropical storms. Florida experiences hurricanes, tropical storms, and tornadoes. Hurricane season is June 1st to November 30th. The most important part of hurricane season is being prepared. Check out our previous blog on Hurricane Preparation to find out how you can be prepared for a hurricane.

Cost of living and Taxes

Florida does not have state income tax. So you’re able to keep more of what you earn. This is a plus as you are able to spend or save more of your hard earned money but there is a flip side. The state of Florida averages higher than most states for overall cost of living. You do have some additional costs in Florida like insurance. Flood insurance is a must here! Make sure to do your research on what insurance is available to you and what it covers.

Tourist

Here in Florida, tourists are a part of life! With the great weather and beautiful beaches, Florida is one of the top states visited in the U.S. There will be seasonal crowds of tourists but not all cities in Florida experience the same amount of tourists. On top of tourism, Florida has many top universities and has a large population of out of state students.

Wildlife

Beware of gators! Florida is the only place in the world home to both the American Alligator and American Crocodile. There are many more animals and wildlife in Florida besides the well known reptilians. Florida is also home to big bugs, sharks, manatees, dolphins, beavers, panthers and bats!
